FRP reinforcement bar is made from high strength glass fibre reinforced with vinyl ester resin. The core of the rebar has all the reinforcing fibre (70% by weight ) along the length of the bar for maximum strength. A helical recess in the surface of the rebar is created in the production process which does not damage the core fibre and is sufficiently deep to give a key to enable the concrete to have a mechanical grip on the rebar.

The choice of vinyl ester resin for the rebar is important. Extensive research work has shown that polyester resin does not have the necessary long term resistance to the corrosive chemicals in the concrete while rebar made with vinyl ester resin gives a 50 year service life when used in accordance with the recognised published standards.

These products are all in the natural (unpigmented) colour of the composite and are in 5m lengths. The 28mm diameter rebar, highlighted in red has a sanded finish applied on top of the helical winding pattern giving additional contact area to grip the concrete.

Rock bolts are used in mines and tunnels to attach the rock to the rock bed.

Hollow rock bolts

Hollow Rock Bolts are drilled into rock faces using GRP Drills which are then sacrificed and resin is inserted down the inside of the rock bolt which then cures.

Epoxy-Resin-and-Basalt-Fibre-Rebar1

All our standard products listed are made in glass fibre reinforced vinyl ester. However there are two alternative materials available with higher properties than the standard materials:

  • Epoxy resin as a more corrosion resistant resin alternative to vinyl ester.
  • Basalt fibre which has a higher strength and stiffness than glass fibre.
  • Composite rebar made with either or both of these alternative materials is available to order.

We stock an extensive range of GRP Rebar in its natural unpigmented colour, semi-translucent beige. We can source a range of coloured GRP Rebar to suit exact specifications, as it is often useful to colour code different diameters when undertaking complex reinforcement projects. If required, the surface can be sanded to increase adhesion to concrete.

Bespoke rebar mesh panels can be made to order and we also stock accessories, including rock bolts, and self-drilling rock bolts.

Environmental considerations

Assessment of the through life environmental impact of different materials is never clear cut and depends, in part, on the assumptions made. Overall composite rebar is seen as having a lower impact than steel rebar for the following reasons:

  • Lower energy use to manufacturer the raw materials and in production
  • Lighter weight so less energy used in transport
  • Possibility of reduced concrete cover results in lower utilisation of cement and cement produces 20 times more CO2 emissions during processing than steel.
  • Longer service life because no corrosion of the rebar
  • Less chemicals and other materials required for maintenance
  • While the steel rebar can be recovered and recycled from demolished sites, the energy required to cut and break up a steel reinforced structure is higher than for composite rebar which is easily cut and crushed and recycled with the aggregate.
